Arsene Wenger names Man United star that improved Fernandes vs Atalanta

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed Paul Pogba as the player who brought out the best of Bruno Fernandes against Atalanta.

Manchester United were forced to come back from behind to beat the Serie A side at Old Trafford in the Champions League after they conceded two early goals in the first half.

Man United were sceptical in the first half and conceded both goals due to poor defending but the story would have been different if they took full advantage of their own chances.

Marcus Rashford and his teammates missed a few chances that would have handed United at least a 3-2 lead before the interval.

Despite the chances that Bruno Fernandes provided, the Portuguese star gave away some sloppy passes in the first half. But in the second half, he played at his best after Paul Pogba replaced Scott McTominay.

And Wenger was impressed with the France star’s performance and also reserved special comments for Cristiano Ronaldo and Fred.

“When Pogba came on, Fernandes became better,” Wenger told beIN sport. “Fernandes had a poor first half, but in the second half became a knife.”

On Ronaldo, he added: “Ronaldo is a champion, and we saw that it is never be coincidence that he turned up again with a wonderful header. We forget many times when we speak about him how good he is in the air.”

Fred was superb against Atalanta and Wenger was impressed by the Brazilian defensive duty.

“I would personally highlight the second half for Fred,” said Wenger. “Fred saved a few crosses in the box, defensively outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half.”
