United could have gone two goals down on the stroke of half-time following a howler from Varane.
Roberto Sanchez, Brighton’s goalkeeper, served the ball into United’s half and Raphael Varane, who needed to clear the ball off the danger zone, attempted to cool the cool but got on the wrong foot and gave away possession.
Danny Welbeck, who was one of the two Brighton’s players pressuring the France star, had a go at once but hit it too much that it flew past an empty goal post.
David de Gea had left his position hoping Varane would head the ball to him or better still, clear the ball if it was too much for the ex-Real Madrid star to control.
Manchester United trail 1-0 at halftime.
Brighton were superb in the first half, with Cristiano Ronaldo getting yellow carded for a needless tackle.
