Manchester United will face Burnley on Tuesday night and Ralf Rangnick is expected to name an unchanged starting lineup as Middlesbrough, though there is room for one or two changes.
Although Man United were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 8-7 on penalties against Boro, their performance before the shootout was really impressive, creativity-wise.
The Red Devils created SEVEN big chances against Middlesbrough but failed to convert any. Jadon Sancho’s goal was widely regarded as a flash of individual brilliance.
It was Pogba’s first appearance since November against Atalanta in the Champions League, over three months on the sidelines due to a thigh injury, but yet, he put out an outstanding performance against Boro, winning a penalty early in the game. Unfortunately, Cristiano Ronaldo missed the target from the penalty spot.
Sancho created a few decent chances and came close to breaking the deadlock early in the game but was denied by the crossbar. His performance was top-notch. As a result, he deserves to maintain his role against Burnley.
Yes, Cristiano Ronaldo missed from a penalty spot, missed a couple of few chances but his presence was felt and kept Boro’s backline unrest.
He hasn’t scored a single goal this year and in his recent performances, one would see how anxious he is to get his first goal of the year. Whenever he plays, there are chances that he would get on the score sheet, after all, he’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the best finisher at United.
Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were in the game though they were wasteful, not clinical enough, not just both of them, Man United as a whole.
Another chance in the starting lineup would give them yet another opportunity to right their wrongs against Burnley on Tuesday night and I see them smashing Burnley, scoring over three goals.
As such, I expect Ralf Rangnick to maintain the same starting lineup against Burnley as Middlesbrough and fans could be about to witness yet another free-flowing performance from the Reds.
The only two changes I expect the German boss to make in his Manchester United starting lineup against Burnley is to drop Diogo Dalot and Dean Henderson.
The right-back didn’t provide anything special or better than what Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been doing. Since he’s returned back to the fold after recovering from his illness, I see him replacing the Portuguese star tomorrow night.
Henderson didn’t impress against Boro and received criticism from Roy Keane after he failed to make a single attempt to stop Boro’s penalty shootout.
Predicted starting lineup: Burnley vs Manchester United
GK: David de Gea
DF: Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw
MF: Pogba, McTominay, Fernandes
FW: Rashford, Ronaldo, Sancho
Rangnick rated Pogba’s performance against Middlesbrough and said the France international played exactly what he wanted from him.
“Paul Pogba played ok, what I expected him to play,” Rangnick told BBC.
Manchester United are in the fourth position in the Premier League and a win over Burnley would only advance their chances of maintaining their top-four push.
