Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea resisted the temptation to slam the centre referee for his abysmal officiating during the clash vs Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford.

Though Man United crashed out of the Champions League following a 1-0 loss to Atletico, the referee Slavko Vincic stole the headlines with his poor officiating.

Manchester United fans and players at Old Trafford were furious over how Vincic managed the game but de Gea would rather not say anything about the officiating during his post-match interview as he believes the obvious is there to see.

“Don’t want to say anything about the referee,” de Gea told BT Sport. “I think everyone who watched can say anything about what happened. You cannot change [it].”

Manchester United’s elimination from the Champions League means they have gone five years without a trophy.

De Gea backs his team-mates to keep fighting in order to break the title drought but concedes it’s a ‘really hard’ position to be.

“It’s hard for the club, for us and the fans,” said de Gea. “It’s really hard. This is where we are at the moment. It’s a difficult situation. We have to keep fighting. I feel very sad. But we were not good enough.”
