Former Bulgaria forward Dimitar Berbatov has advised Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick to bench Harry Maguire in their clash against Tottenham.
Maguire was subjected to yet another widespread criticism for playing a row in Man United’s massive defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
City thrashed Manchester United 4-1 at Etihad, with the England defender playing a role in handing Man City their second goal after Jadon Sancho had scored the equaliser with a curled effort.
Much has been said concerning Harry Maguire’s performance, with a large number of Man United fans urging Ralf Rangnick to strip him of the captaincy and drop him to the bench.
Berbatov described Manchester United’s performance against Man City as ‘unacceptable’ and said he felt ‘saddened’ after watching how City outclassed his former club at Etihad.
The ex-Tottenham star would go on to suggest that Ralf Rangnick could take a step forward in helping Harry Maguire return back to his best by resting him against Spurs.
“I was angered and saddened by United’s performance against City,” Berbatov told Betfair. “It was unacceptable.
“The players and the manager must ask themselves: “What more can I do? How can I do more for this team?” They need to take responsibility.
“Harry Maguire can perform better. He knows that. The mistakes he is making are damaging his ability to lead the team. He needs to correct his positioning and work on his decision-making.
“Ralf Rangnick can step in here. Maybe he needs to give Maguire a rest and give somebody else a chance.”
The likes of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are available to partner alongside Victor Lindelof. Raphael Varane, who missed the Manchester derby with COVID-19, is expected to miss the game against Tottenham.
