Fred Rutten has explained why he turned down what he described as an ‘uncomfortable’ opportunity to assist Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Man United announced in April that Ten Hag will become their new permanent manager, who will take over from Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

The Dutchman will be allowed to have his say on United’s transfer business as well as appointing who he wants as part of his coaching staff at Old Trafford.

The 52-year-old contacted Fred Rutten to be his new assistant boss at United but the new PSV assistant manager to Van Nistelrooy explained why he turned the offer down.

Erik ten Hag asked me to be his assistant at Manchester United, I said no,” said Fred Rutten. “Everyone makes his own choices in life. I have a family, I have grandchildren that I want to see. This type of project – I felt uncomfortable with it.

At Man United, you get on a train and you can’t get off it. I want to feel comfortable in something you step into. That is the case with PSV.”
