Gerard Pique claims Cristiano Ronaldo was 'close' to joining Barcelona

Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has claimed that Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo was ‘once close’ to signing for Barca before sealing a move to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid made Ronaldo the world’s most expensive player when they signed him from Man United in 2009 for a reported £80million.

The Portuguese forward’s move to Los Blancos wasn’t one of those transfer sagas as only Real were strongly keen on sealing his signature.

However, Pique has claimed that the Manchester United icon was a target for Barcelona, insisting the 37-year-old was once close to signing for the Catalans before his stunning move to Madrid.

“Cristiano [Ronaldo] was once close to Barca before he signed for Madrid,” Pique, who left Manchester United in 2008 in a £5million transfer fee, admitted, speaking on Ibai’s Twitch channel. “Same for Vinicius [Junior].”

The five-time Ballon d’Or would not only go on to become one of Real Madrid’s greatest players but also one of the greatest footballers of all time.

During Ronaldo’s first season at Santiago Bernabeu, he scored 26 goals and provided 12 assists.

The Portuguese skipper would go on to register 450 goals in 438 matches throughout his nine-year stay at Madrid and would win 15 trophies, including four Champions League titles.

In 2018, Real Madrid sold Ronaldo to Juventus for a reported £100million and as anticipated, the prolific forward would not only score 81 Serie A goals, but would also go on to win several titles including two Serie A titles before sealing a £15million move back to Manchester United last summer.

So far, the forward, who will turn 38 years next month, has continued his goalscoring form at Old Trafford, notching 14 goals in all competitions so far with the Red Devils.
