Michael Owen and Owen Hargreaves have both predicted that Manchester United are the favourites for the draw against Atletico Madrid but warned that the tie is like ‘a case of flipping a coin’.
Man United finished as the winners of their Champions League Group F ahead of Villarreal, who finished as the runners-up, with Atalanta and Young Boys finishing third and fourth respectively.
Atletico Madrid booked their round of 16 spot on the final day of the group stage following a tough win at Porto.
Manchester United initially got PSG as their round of 16 opponents but after some technical error, the draw was redone and they eventually got paired alongside the La Liga side, who finished 2nd behind Liverpool in Group B.
Atletico Madrid are known for their defensive doggedness, something Owen Hargreaves warned United about plus naming the likes of Joao Felix and Luis Suarez as players, who can hurt the Red Devils.
‘Jan Oblak is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. It’s slightly easier for United, but it’s a case of flipping a coin of who will go through.
‘It’s a huge clash in styles between Rangnick and Simeone. Atletico play more defensive on the counter.’
Owen, former Man United and Liverpool forward, believes the redraw suited United, as Ateltico are an easier opponent than Lionel Messi’s PSG.
‘Simeone is one of the best managers in the world, ‘ said Owen.
‘It’s a tough tie for Manchester United, but it’s slightly easier than Paris Saint Germain.’
