'He was somewhere near his best" - Micah Richards hails Manchester United star Aston Villa performance

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has claimed that Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes was at ‘somewhere near his best’ against Aston Villa.

Fernandes gave Man United a two-goal lead at Villa Park after scoring two beautiful goals in style.

No doubt, that was the best performance from the Portuguese midfielder since Cristiano Ronaldo made his second Manchester United debut against Newcastle United.

And this performance came in the absence of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Richards believes the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder, who captained Manchester United, with Harry Maguire on the bench, stepped up to be the main man United fan witnessed last season.

‘It was the Bruno Fernandes of last season. He really was back to somewhere near his best,’ former England defender Richards said on BBC’s Match of the Day.

‘He just dictated the game. He gets a bit lucky with the first goal but if you don’t shoot you don’t score.

‘I just liked the way he dictated the game. He ticked things over and was always looking forward and organising the team.

‘With all the talk of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, I really think Fernandes stepped up today and was the main man for United.’

Manchester United gave away their two-goal lead late in the game against Aston Villa, something they refused to learn from their narrow 1-0 win over Villa in the FA Cup on Monday.
