Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is expected to announce who his captain will be in the coming weeks and Fabrizio Romano has revealed the steps Ten Hag would prefer to follow.
Former Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed Harry Maguire from Leicester City in 2019 and made him his skipper months after his signing following the departure of former captain, Ashley Young, to Inter Milan in 2020 winter transfer market.
Maguire’s performance would drop gradually as a result and many fans had relentlessly urged previous bosses Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick to strip the England international of the club captaincy in a bid to help the former Foxes defender focus on bouncing back to his top form.
Failure to listen to the fans took its toll on Manchester United and The Red Devils did not only finish the season without a trophy but also finished 6th in the league, four positions dropped compared to last two seasons.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Ten Hag has decided to speak to every player in his current United team before deciding which player will become his captain.
The Sports journalist also confirmed that this decision would be announced in coming days or weeks.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes, David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo are seemingly the top names to take over from Maguire if the former Ajax boss decides to give the 28-year-old a break.
Manchester United will start their pre-season on June 27 but are yet to make any signing though the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Antony and Christian Eriksen are strongly linked with a summer move to Old Trafford.
