"I wouldn't have taken him off' - Alan Shearer surprised by Rangnick's decision in Leeds win

Alan Shearer was left surprised after Ralf Rangnick substituted Paul Pogba during Manchester United’s win over Leeds United, insisting that he wouldn’t have done that because Pogba was their best player on the pitch.

Man United secured a resounding, well-deserved 4-2 win over Leeds United, though their fun was threatened early in the second half.

United led at half-time 2-0, thanks to beautiful headers from Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, with Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho providing the assists respectively.

Shortly after the interval, The Whites scored two quick goals to keep things at 2-2 and The Red Devils needed to start all over again.

Midway through the second half, Rangnick hauled off Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard for Fred and Anthony Elanga respectively, with the France star touted as the best player on the pitch.

Rangnick’s decisions to pull off Pogba while United were being held by the Yorkshire, raised several eyebrows, including that of Shearer, but the German’s gambles paid off when both Fred and Elanga scored United’s third and fourth goals late in the game.

Shearer admitted that he wouldn’t have substituted Paul Pogba because he thought the Frenchman was their best player on the pitch but gave credits to Ralf Rangnick for the huge decision

‘The crowd were up at Elland Road and they got back to 2-2,” Shearer told Premier League Productions.

“What have you got? Show me as a manager [Ralf Rangnick] what you have got as a team and a squad. Are you going to be together?

‘On that evidence, he can have no complaints. The reaction was absolutely superb and from himself in the way that he helped influence the game by making the decisions that he made with the two substitutes [Fred & Elanga].

‘I wouldn’t have taken [Paul] Pogba off. I thought he was their best player. He saw things differently and he saw him tiring. As a manager, sometimes you’ve got to make big decisions.

‘It might be uncomfortable for individuals, but you have got to try and put that to one side.

‘That worked perfectly for him because the two guys that came on both got a goal each, they both changed the game and helped win the game for Manchester United.’

The Manchester United interim manager explained why he replaced Paul Pogba in the second half and confessed he didn’t expect Fred and Elanga to be United’s second-half goalscorers.
