Former Arsenal player Ian Wright has blamed Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay for Wolves’ late winner on Monday night.

Man United succumbed to rather a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Wolves after Joao Moutinho’s late strike made the difference.

The visiting side was miles better than Manchester United at Old Trafford and were unlucky not to get the opener in the first half.

Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic played as holding midfielders against the West Midlands side but both did little to nothing to prevent Moutinho from scoring.

McTominay was named as the man of the match last Monday after helping Manchester United beat Burnley 3-1.

But against Wolves, he was well off the pace and Wright believes the Scotland international did not play as a holding midfielder and thinks he should have done better to prevent Moutinho from scoring.

‘We can nitpick and say where the header from Phil Jones should have gone but at the same time you have got to be more away of where you, the holding midfielder are going in defensively to try and stop him [Moutinho],’ said Wright.

‘Look how much time he [Joao Moutinho] has got – McTominay is the one who is closest to try and get to him. If he is in the team, he’s got to be in the team to do that job!

‘He’s not in the team to do anything progressive because he hasn’t done anything progressive. If he’s going to be that defensive holding midfielder then you do that job. He didn’t do it.’

McTominay will miss the Aston Villa trip with suspension after the midfielder received a yellow card against Wolves, making it five times this season.
