Joe Cole explains why 'high-tariff' Bruno Fernandes has struggled this season, hails Ronaldo

Former Chelsea and West Ham United forward has explained why Bruno Fernandes has struggled at Manchester United this term and hailed Cristiano Ronaldo.

Man United signed Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon three seasons ago and the Portuguese midfielder played a superb role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s two full seasons, helping The Reds finish 3rd and 2nd respectively in the Premier League.

This season, the attacking midfielder has struggled to replicate either of his performances from the last two seasons, which is one of the reasons United are where they are this term.

Some pundits and fans thought the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo played a role in Fernandes’ decline in form, and Cole also made come comments on that narrative.

Bruno is what I like to call a high-tariff player,’ former England star Cole told Coral. ‘He takes risks with the ball, he likes to be the player everything goes through and he’s a tremendous footballer with great technical ability.

‘But I think he’s struggled with the pressure on his shoulders. The team just isn’t working this season. And I feel like Bruno operates a lot better when things are flowing through him.

‘At the moment, obviously you’ve got Ronaldo, and he becomes the pivotal point. Bruno is a rhythm player and needs things going through him and he’ll take chances. And when it doesn’t work, then I feel like he struggles.

‘It highlights the other side of his game, he’s not an amazing presser, he’s not physically good. He’s like a quarterback, he needs to be dictating the play.’

Bruno Fernandes may be inconsistent at Old Trafford whilst playing behind Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, at Old Trafford, that hasn’t stopped his compatriot from scoring goals.

The former Real Madrid forward added to his tally on Thursday night when he scored the equaliser with a brilliant volley against Chelsea.

In total, the 37-year-old has scored 23 goals in all competitions this season, 17 goals in the Premier League and Joe Cole believes Ronaldo would still be scoring goals because he’s an incredible player.

Cole added: ‘Ronaldo will score goals. If you put him in front of goal in ten years’ time, he’ll still put it away. He is just an incredible player who is no doubt one of the greatest of all time.

‘There’s no cohesion at all in this Manchester United team, so the fact he is still managing to score goals is a credit to him.

‘I would imagine Manchester United not winning a trophy is not good enough for him, because no matter how many goals he has scored, he’s such a winner.’
