Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has backed Manchester United to secure another impressive result against Leeds United on Sunday.
Man United bounced back to winning ways on Tuesday night when they beat in-form Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Old Trafford, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring early in the second half to end his six-match goal drought and Bruno Fernandes scoring the last goal in the last-minute of the game.
United will look to continue where they left off against The Whites this weekend in a bid to put pressure on third-placed Chelsea, who lead Man United with four points with a game in hand.
Manchester United have dominated Leeds United in their last three matches. The Red Devils beat Leeds 6-2 at Old Trafford last season but were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Elland Road in the return leg.
United had already won the Yorkshire side 5-1 at Old Trafford this season and will look to do the Premier League double over Marcelo Bielsa’s men and Merson has given Ralf Rangnick his blessings to do so, though he described the game as ‘massive’.
‘This is a massive game. Manchester United have done well against Leeds United since their return to the Premier League and I fancy them to get a positive result once again,’ the Arsenal hero told Sportskeeda.
‘If Leeds had all their players fit, I would’ve probably fancied them, but it has to be said that the way they play suits Manchester United.
‘There will be goals in this one, so I’m going for a 3-1 win for Manchester United.”
Jadon Sancho has been one of Manchester United’s top performers in recent games despite playing on the left-wing rather than his suited right wing he operated while at Borussia Dortmund.
Merson has questioned Ralf Rangnick’s decision to switch the England international to the position, where Marcus Rashford has thrived in recent seasons.
“I don’t really know why Jadon Sancho is playing as a left-winger after impressing on the right side at Borussia Dortmund, but he’s trying to get to grips with the Premier League and will be alright in the grand scheme of things,” Merson added.
“The kid can play because he’s got talent and will start to produce consistently with a confidence boost and better decision-making in the final third.
‘As for Bruno Fernandes, he’s just got to get on the ball and make things happen for his team. The more touches he gets, the better Manchester United play as a team. Personally, I like it when he plays a little deeper because he can pick a pass, but I also like where he is playing under Ralf Rangnick at the moment.’
Though Paul Merson expects Manchester United to win comfortably, he also expects United’s top-four rivals excluding Tottenham, to get their win.
Wolves have emerged to be in the top-four race as well as Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham United, thanks to their run of good form.
Merson backs Wolves to beat Leicester City at the Molineux Stadium, Arsenal to beat Brentford, West Ham United to end Newcastle United’s winning run, and Chelsea to get a tight win at Crystal Palace.
Paul Merson’s predictions
Leeds United 1-3 Manchester United
West Ham United 2-0 Newcastle United
Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea
Wolves 2-1 Leicester City
Arsenal 3-0 Brentford
Manchester City 4-0 Tottenham
