Man City star admits he was 'really close' to joining Manchester United

Manchester City forward Jack Grealish has revealed that he was ‘really close’ to signing for Manchester United last summer.

Man United were keen on strengthening their squad last season and were linked with several quality players across Europe.

The former Aston Villa skipper, Jack Grealish was one of the top midfielders Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted at Old Trafford in 2020.

The likes of James Maddison, Youri Tielemans, and Bruno Fernandes were also transfer targets for United but the Reds signed Fernandes in January 2020.

Grealish subsequently moved to the other part of Manchester before the start of this season in a £100million transfer fee.

The England international has revealed that the reports leading him to the Theatre of Dreams were true but maintained that the transfer eventually yielded to nothing.

“I was really close to going [to Manchester United in 2020] but nothing happened in the end,” Grealish said as quoted on Telegraph.

“We played United in a pre-season game on Saturday and I wasn’t supposed to play in a cup game at Burton.”
