Manchester United defender Phil Jones has reportedly asked to play for Man United U23s against Chelsea U23.
Jones has struggled to make his way back to the first team for a very long time. In fact, his last appearances were during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s period as interim manager.
Last month, the England international made the Manchester United first-team squad against Chelsea, 650 days after he had been frozen out.
Despite making the bench, at the expense of Harry Maguire’s suspension, the English defender was an unused substitute.
It’s over 700 days since Phil Jones last featured for Manchester United and his last appearance came in January during United’s defeat to Burnley in 2020.
However, in a bid to build his fitness, The Athletics have reported that Jones has asked to play for Manchester United’s U23s against Chelsea in the Premier League 2 on Friday at Leigh Sports Village.
The Manchester United junior players currently occupy the 7th in the table, whereas Chelsea are 11th, with seven points behind the Reds, so they have a bit of work to do after the winter break.
The 29-year-old defender has decided to take up this challenge in a bid to be ready in case Ralf Rangnick calls upon him and also, in case any team comes knocking for his services.
