Manchester United players reportedly in split over how teammate Mason Greenwood has been treated after his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault, with some not ready to ostracise him until he is proven guilty.
Greenwood’s girlfriend Harriet Robson storm social media after she uploaded photos and audio recordings to her Instagram story, where she accused the forward of domestic violence.
As a result, the 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and rape and was further arrested on 1 February on suspicion of threats to kill and sexual assault.
Several fans were stunned by Greenwood’s off-pitch behaviour, the youngster’s teammates were reportedly ‘shocked and appalled’ but some are yet to cut him adrift.
According to The Sun, some players in the first team squad adjudge it is wrong to ostracise the England international until he is proven guilty of the crimes his girlfriend accused him of.
The likes of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and David de Gea all unfollowed Mason Greenwood on social media upon hearing the accusations, with other players feeling pressured to do so, even though they adjudge it is wrong to spurn him at this stage.
A source told the Sun that it is causing a rift in the squad, with some players believing they should stand by Greenwood, at least until the forward is charged with the crimes.
The Sun’s source said: ‘One player, in particular, is furious about it. He feels that ditching Mason shows they are not together.
‘If Mason is convicted of what he has been accused of, then clearly all the players will be horrified. But the police haven’t even decided if they have enough evidence to charge him or not yet.
‘Some of those closest to him feel the course of justice should be allowed to run.’
