Michael Carrick issues encouraging injury update on Raphael Varane

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Raphael Varane has returned to light training but won’t be in action in the nearest days.

Man United signed Varane from Real Madrid in the summer but the France star’s chances of improving United’s backline has been thwarted by injury issues.

Varane suffered a hamstring injury in the first half during Manchester United’s dramatic comeback 3-2 win over Atalanta at Old Trafford in the Champions League.

In his absence, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got sacked following a run of huge defeats to Leicester City, Liverpool, Man City and Watford.

Carrick has confirmed that Varane has returned on grass but informed fans not to expect the ex-Real Madrid star in action too soon.

Carrick told MUTV: “Yeah, Rapha’s [Varane] rehab is going really well.

“He’s out on the grass but it won’t be any time this week, by any stretch, it’ll be a little bit further than that, if not even longer.”

Manchester United will host Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday night in the Premier League and Varane will miss the tie.
