Paul Merson has advised Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick to drop Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo out of the team against Manchester City.
Man United will face City away from home in the Premier League on Sunday, knowing that a win will not only advance their chances of finishing in the top-four but also put Liverpool in a good position to snatch the title under Man City’s noses.
However, The Red Devils would look to push for an unlikely win at Etihad tomorrow but Merson doesn’t see it happening if Ronaldo and Maguire are in the team.
Harry Maguire has endured widespread criticism for his lack of consistency, with many fans urging Rangnick to strip him of United’s captaincy.
Reports emerged this week that the England international has angered some of his team-mates with his performances, with a few outlets claiming the former Leicester City defender would be replaced as captain at the end of the season as a result.
Reacting to that speculation surrounding the Manchester United defender, Paul Merson told Sky Sports: ‘That’s not nice, I don’t like that because [Harry] Maguire comes across as a top bloke and as a good professional who looks after the players, he’s not really worried about himself, he’s a team player.’
However, the ex-Arsenal star Merson thinks both Maguire and Ronaldo should both be omitted from the team for the Manchester derby at the Etihad.
‘For me, I don’t think he [Maguire] plays in this game,’ Merson added.
Reports emerged today that Ralf Rangnick has decided to start Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench against Man City.
But the Portuguese star was not spotted alongside three of his team-mates as the Man United squad made their way to Etihad on Saturday.
