Predicted starting XI for Chelsea vs Manchester United: Three likely changes

Manchester United will play visitors to Chelsea on Sunday in the Premier League but will Michael Carrick maintain the same starting lineup from the last game?

Man United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last weekend after Watford thrashing and Michael Carrick was appointed as the caretaker manager.

The former England midfielder managed his first game against Villarreal on Tuesday night in the Champions League and recorded a comfortable 2-0 win.

Carrick used a 4-2-3-1 formation, the same formation Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regularly used during his time at Old Trafford.

Would the club legend maintain the same formation against Thomas Tuchel on Sunday evening or would he switch to a 3-5-2 formation?

Regardless of which formation he chooses to use against the Blues, I believe the likes of Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial will start on the bench. Harry Maguire will miss the game due to suspension. These are the three changes I expect Carrick to make ahead of the Chelsea game.

Marcus Rashford set to start for Manchester United vs Chelsea

This means Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Eric Bailly are set to make the starting lineup against the Premier League leaders.

Predicted Manchester United starting line-up vs Chelsea

GK: David de Gea
DF: Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Telles
MF: Fred, McTominay, Fernandes
FW: Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford

Manchester United will be without Paul Pogba, who is struggling with a hamstring injury. Raphael Varane hasn’t returned to training due to the same muscle injury.

Luke Shaw missed the Villarreal game but Carrick confirmed that the England international will need checking before confirming whether he will make the trip or not.

Mason Greenwood is still recovering from COVID-19. The winger has missed United’s last two games against Watford and Villarreal.

Carrick provides team news ahead of the Chelsea clash: “Luke [Shaw] took a bang on the head a few weeks ago and took a bang against Watford.

“We’ll make a call on him — Fred twisted his ankle, played a big part [against Villarreal], we will have to see how that settles down.”
