Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has claimed that he prevented Anthony Elanga from leaving the club on loan after he watched some of his highlights on YouTube.
Elanga may not have gotten more playing time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer let alone being a regular, but he has been one of Rangnick’s favourites.
The 19-year-old has started twice in a row for the German boss against Aston Villa and Brentford.
Elanga impressed against Villa. Though he wasn’t on the score sheet as United were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw, he came close twice before he was replaced by Jadon Sancho.
However, after ab eye-catching performance against Steven Gerrard’s side, he maintained his starting role against Brentford and would get the breakthrough in the second half.
Ralf Rangnick is a big admirer of the teenager, who was linked with a loan move away from United due to number of quality forwards ahead of him in the pecking order.
The ex-Leipzig boss has now confirmed that he decided against letting the young Swede leave the club this month after he watched some of his best moments on YouTube.
‘I must say from the very first day from my first training session, he [Anthony Elanga] showed up,’ Rangnick told BBC Sport.
‘l had heard his name before and I was in my hotel room watching videos of him on YouTube, I thought this boy was really good.
‘He was almost on his way out on loan, I told him you will not go out on loan, you will say here. He has developed in training.’
Anthony Martial returned back to the Manchester United squad against Brentford but was left on the bench.
With the likes of Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all expected to be available on the weekend, it’s unclear if Elanga would maintain his starting role against the Hammers.
Sancho missed Wednesday’s win due to personal reasons and could be back in action for the West Ham clash on Saturday.
