Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick and Antonio Conte were full of praise for Cristiano Ronaldo, who single-handedly beat Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Man United needed a response following last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford and they did just that against Spurs.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a top drawer after scoring from a long distance. You can watch the goal here.
Harry Kane scored the equaliser from the penalty box after Alex Telles handled the ball inside United’s penalty box. A few minutes later, Ronaldo restored Man United’s lead from a close-range.
Midway through the second half, Harry Maguire scored an own goal to pull Manchester United’s lead behind but Ronaldo, who started the scoring would end it with a beautiful header.
Ralf Rangnick was pleased with Ronaldo’s performance against Spurs, describing it as the Portuguese star’s ‘best’ since he was announced as interim manager.
“Today it was his [Ronaldo] best performance, at least since I arrived,” Rangnick told BBC. “He was good in training on Thursday and that is why I decided to start him. Fantastic performance by him but also by the rest of the team.
“He [Ronaldo] can do it [get 70,000 people off their feet], but again he can also do it only with the team. A fantastic performance. It was not just the three goals today it was also he was part of the team when they were in possession of the ball.”
The German boss continued his interview with Sky Sports: “[Cristiano Ronaldo] was also energetic today. He was part of the whole team when we had to defend, because we had to defend a lot.
“It was a top performance by him, but also by the rest of the team. I didn’t expect him [Ronaldo] to score three goals, but I expected him to score. That’s why I decided to play him.
“His training session was so good on Thursday – I spoke to him before training on Friday & he said his hip flexor was good enough to play.”
Antonio Conte was impressed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance, hailing the Portuguese icon as the ‘top’ player in the world.
The Spurs boss would further hail the 37-year-old as a match-decider, after his hat-trick denied Tottenham a single point at Old Trafford.
“We’re talking about a player who not only tonight showed he is a top, top player,” Conte told Sky Sports.
“Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi are the two best players in the world in this era. When you play against this type of player, they’re decisive.”
