Ralf Rangnick makes 'top players' dilemma admission ahead of Atletico Madrid clash

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has admitted that he faces a difficult task on choosing his centre-back pairing against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Man United will host Atletico at Old Trafford on Tuesday in the Champions League round of 16 second leg.

Rangnick has preferred the likes of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire as his centre-back options despite hailing Victor Lindelof whenever he plays at the back.

Last weekend against Tottenham, Maguire and Varane paired at the back but failed to keep a clean sheet, with the former scoring an own goal late in the game.

Lindelof came on late in the game to tighten things up at the back and successfully did exactly what Rangnick instructed him to do.

As a result, he is in contention to start against Atleti, with Maguire putting out another dreadful performance at the back, but Rangnick understands that he has top players challenging for the position.

Rangnick speaking about Varane: “He’s very important but with Victor Lindelof we have also won quite a few games and played well and had quite a few clean sheets.

“Right now, we have top players in the centre of defence and it will not be so easy for me to take that decision for tomorrow.

“When Victor [Lindelof] came on [Tottenham], he played well. As I said, it’s good to have Raphael [Varane] fully fit again.

“We looked after him and he looked after himself, not playing too early again. Now he seems to be fit on a regular basis.”
