Ralf Rangnick names his Manchester United captain after Harry Maguire's widespread criticism

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Harry Maguire will remain as captain despite fans wanting a new leader.

Former Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made Maguire the captain of the club less than six months after his arrival from Leicester City.

Since accepting the club’s armband in 2020, the England international has rather received widespread criticism due to his lack of leadership and poor performances.

Several Manchester United fans believe Maguire’s lack of consistency shows he isn’t fit to be the club’s captain and should be stripped of the captaincy. Rio Ferdinand has previously admitted that United made a wrong decision to give the 28-year-old the club’s armband, insisted that David de Gea should have been the captain.

However, Rangnick believes he sees no reason to remove Harry Maguire as captain and insists the England centre-half will continue to lead the team out of the tunnel when available.

Ralf Rangnick told MUTV: “Right now I don’t see a reason to do that because Harry [Maguire] has been the captain so far and as long as Harry is playing he will be the captain and if he’s not playing then someone else will have to be the captain.”

Maguire missed United’s last two matches against Wolves and Aston Villa due to an injury.

The ex-Foxes defender could be available for the game against Villa on Saturday.
