Ralf Rangnick reveals why Scott McTominay missed Atletico Madrid clash

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has stated that Scott McTominay missed tonight’s Champions League clash vs Atletico Madrid due to illness.

Man United will look to extend their winning run to three games when they lock horns with Atleti at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano tonight in the round of 16 first leg.

McTominay’s miss would surely be a big blow to The Red Devils, given the decent performances he has put in United’s recent games.

The Scotland international has started all of United’s games this month, including last week’s 2-0 and 4-2 wins over Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United respectively.

Now, United will look to cope without the Man United academy, with Fred set to start in the midfield alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking ahead of the clash, the German boss told MUTV: “He [McTominay] is ill unfortunately. I spoke with him this afternoon, he’s still not feeling well.

“We had a little bit of hope that he might be available — we had to find the best possible formation and lineup without Scotty.”

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone rated Scott McTominay highly and hailed him and Paul Pogba as two of the best midfielders in the world with great balance.

“They [Manchester United] have an incredible midfield,” said Simeone ahead of the Champions League round of 16 first leg at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

“I am incredibly impressed with the work rate.

“Pogba and McTominay are two of the best midfielders in the world with a great balance.”
