Ralf Rangnick rules Manchester United star out of Young Boys tie after injury in training

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has ruled out Anthony Martial for the Young Boys’ clash on Wednesday after sustaining an injury in training last weekend.

The France international came in as a second-half substitute against Chelsea and Arsenal before missing last weekend’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace with an injury.

Rangnick has revealed that Martial suffered a knee injury during training on Saturday, hence his absence from the Manchester United squad vs Palace.

And the German boss has claimed that the medical department advised him to give the 26-year-old forward time to recover.

“Anthony [Martial] trained on Saturday and half an hour after he had pain on his knee — we had meeting with medical department and we agreed he should try to recover,” said Rangnick.

“We need to make sure he reduces pain in next few days and hopefully have him back training next week.”

Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane both trained with the squad today but Rangnick has thwarted any chance of the duo making the squad vs Young Boys after backing them to return to full training next week.

“They [Varane & Cavani] both cannot play tomorrow but they were part of the traning today,” Rangnick added. “Edi even yesterday, Rapha the first time.

“Expect them [Varane & Cavani] both in full training next week. Both top players. It is also about sustainability.

“It would be great to have them as soon as possible, but obviously for rest of season.”
