Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has claimed Anthony Martial decided not to be part of the squad against Aston Villa.
Since the signings of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, Martial’s playing time reduced drastically.
The France star last made Man United’s matchday squad in November against Arsenal and as expected, he featured as a second-half substitute.
With the absences of Cristiano Ronaldo (hip injury) and Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial was expected to be in the squad against Aston Villa.
The German boss had previously froze the 26-year-old off his matchday squad due to the player’s uncertain future.
However, Rangnick has revealed that Martial’s absence in tonight’s squad was rather down to the player’s decision.
“He [Anthony Martial] didn’t want to be in the squad, he would have been in the squad normally but he didn’t want to and that was the reason why he didn’t travel with us yesterday,” Rangnick said after the Aston Villa 2-2 draw.
The former Monaco forward has been attracting interest from Spain and Italy.
Sevilla, Barcelona and Juventus have all shown interest in the Frenchman.
