Raphael Varane has named David de Gea ahead of top-goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United’s best player this season.

Man United have endured yet another disappointing season as they are set on finishing the season without a single trophy, something they are familiar with since five years ago.

Erik ten Hag‘s era will begin at the end of this current season after he was announced as Manchester United manager in April, hopefully he would finally put an end to United’s title drought.

Varane hails the Dutchman’s coaching ability and relishes the opportunity to work with Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

“I played against them in the Champions League and they played very well,” Varane said. “I’m very excited to work with him,’ Varane said.

“I’m looking forward to work with him. I think he has good experience and he’s a good person to work in this club.”

Though the majority of Man United’s players have struggled this season, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea were more consistent that the rest and many football pundits believe the pair are the reason United aren’t way behind in the Premier League table.

Ronaldo has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season and has scored many match winning goals and equalisers but Varane thinks De Gea has been United’s most standout player this term.

Asked if De Gea had been United’s best player this term, Varane replied: ‘I agree. David is having an amazing season. He helped us a lot. I think he has experience and he’s an amazing goalkeeper.’

Raphael Varane finally scored his first Manchester United goal on Monday night to help United beat Brentford 3-0 at Old Trafford.

While Varane’s first season at United has not gone the exact way he initially thought, he says it has been an ‘amazing’ experience and insists he wants to ‘fight’ for trophies next season.

The Frenchman added: ‘The experience it’s amazing. The feeling to be a United player is something special. I am very happy to play in the Premier League and it’s a great experience.

“I’m always positive and I think with a good pre-season, with good work, we can prepare well the next season and be ready to fight for every trophy. That’s the ambition of this club.”
