Top 10 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quotes on Manchester United senior players

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may not have won a trophy throughout his three years stay at Old Trafford but his remarks on some of his former players still ring aloud.

Solskjaer was a huge fan of Scott McTominay and Fred, a partnership that worked wonders in the midfield against the finest Premier League sides but for some questionable reasons, some Man United fans criticised the Norwegian’s midfield preference.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also a huge fan of David de Gea, but that annoyed a decent number of Manchester United fans, given how the Norwegian tactician kept starting the Spaniard ahead of Dean Henderson, despite the 30-year-old being inconsistent in the 2019/2020 season.

The former Molde manager was also keen on developing the likes of Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial into a formidable attacking line but that also attracted some questions.

Although Eric Bailly didn’t pocket enough playing time under Solskjaer, he was still rated highly by the former Manchester United boss.

Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba? They were Solskjaers favourites when at the top of their games and Harry Maguire? he was undroppable!

Top 10 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quotes on his former Manchester United players

Solskjaer on Eric Bailly on : ‘He’s such a top, top defender and his block from Kovacic there was just out of this world defending. He’s quick, he strong, brave, brave as a lion. It’s great to have him back.’ [MUTV]

On Bruno Fernandes on : “He’s [Bruno Fernandes] a box-to-box midfielder. He can do everything a midfielder can do — some games he’ll play in a two, some games he’ll play in attacking midfield, some games he’ll be a 10. He’s played every position in midfield.’ [Sky Sports]

On Marcus Rashford on : ‘Marcus is going to be a top-quality player. I love working with him. I am sure PSG will look at Marcus the way we look at Mbappe – he’s one of the main threats.’ [MUTV]

Solskjaer on Paul Pogba on : “Manchester United is about being in a team. I would not stand for anyone thinking he is bigger than Man United because no-one is. Absolutely no-one is and Paul [Pogba] knows this. It is not only Paul, it is for all of us.’ [MEN]

On Harry Maguire on : “He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes – I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch. He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club.” [MUTV]

On Anthony Martial on : “I am glad he is in my team. He has contributed to so many chances, so many goals. He is a Manchester United player. He excites the crowd. He excites the manager. He excites his team-mates. And he is a great character around the place.”

On Cristiano Ronaldo on : “He’s [Cristiano Ronaldo] not signed to sit on the bench. He will make us a better team. There has been a couple of enquiries for some of our players. With the signing of Cristiano we might give less playing time to a few.

On David de Gea on : “I’ve played with a few fantastic goalkeepers, we have a tradition of having them and he has grown and grown, he deserves that man-of-the-match today. Fantastic. Obviously when you make 11 saves it is a top performance, but even so, two of them were top saves but the rest you would expect David to make. We could have scored a few as well but we had a good back four and David de Gea in behind them was unbelievable.” [BBC]

On Luke Shaw on : “Luke [Shaw] is one of those lads with strength and power and quality, and of course down the left-hand side he’s created a good relationship with Marcus [Rashford]. Sometimes he’s [Luke Shaw] got to stay back more and sometimes he’s the one that goes. I’ve enjoyed working with Luke for a couple of seasons now and he’s a very talented boy that I still want to push on.” [MUTV]

On Scott McTominay and Fred on : “Towards the end of the season that [squad options] will help us – when you leave Scott [McTominay] and Fred out it’s not easy because they deserve to play every game, but Nemanja [Matić] and Paul [Pogba] played so well against Everton.” [Guardian]
