"We helped Cristiano Ronaldo gets his hat-trick" - Norwich City boss claims

Norwich City boss Dean Smith has claimed that his players helped Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo get the hat-trick in today’s clash.

Man United needed a response to last weekend’s eye-scratching performance that led to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Everton. They did so against The Canaries, though it didn’t come easily.

Ronaldo opened the scoring with a tap-in. The 37-year-old scored a header in the 31st minute to double the lead.

Kieran Dowell pulled a goal back just before the half-time whistle. Early in the second half Teemu Pukki scored the equaliser with a brilliant finish.

The visitors could have completed their comeback but David de Gea was equal to the task. Late in the game, Ronaldo scored the match-winning goal from a free kick.

Ronaldo’s first goal came after Anthony Elanga did what he’s paid to do by dispossessing a Norwich City player inside their own half.

His next two goals came from set-pieces but Dean Smith believes his players could have done better against the Portugal international.

“[Cristiano] Ronaldo will get the plaudits with his hat-trick and rightly so but we helped him. We know we can do a lot better against him,” the Norwich boss told BBC after the final whistle.

David de Gea was pleased with the Portuguese forward’s performance and described him as a ‘top player’.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a top player, he always tries to score goals and tries to be there for the team,” De Gea told BBC.

Manchester United moved to the fifth position following their tight win over Norwich City and Arsenal’s 1-0 loss at Southampton.

Earlier today, Brighton beat Tottenham 1-0 away from home.
