“When he came in, we controlled the game vs Aston Villa” – Ralf Rangnick hails Donny van de Beek influence

"When he came in, we controlled the game vs Aston Villa" - Ralf Rangnick hails Donny van de Beek influence

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has hailed Donny van de Beek after his cameo changed the game against Aston Villa.

Man United started the game correctly and was rewarded with an early goal, thanks to a beautiful header from Scott McTominay.

In the second half, United couldn’t match Villa’s tempo, hence why David de Gea was called into action on a few occasions.

Late in the game, Ralf Rangnick decided to bring in Van de Beek to replace Edinson Cavani.

The German boss brought in the Dutchman in the last 20 minutes of the game and then switched to a 4-4-2 diamond (4-1-2-1-2) formation.

Van de Beek pressed higher up the pitch and helped United keep Aston Villa out from goal-scoring positions.

Rangnick told Samuel Luckhurst, via MEN: “From the very moment when we changed to a diamond in the last 20 minutes, when Donny [van de Beek] came on, from then on we controlled the game.”

Manchester United performance wasn’t near a Manchester United performance but it was better than their display against Wolves.

Rangnick asked if he saw progress tonight and he told BBC: “Yes.

“To say that this was a perfect game, nobody would believe that, of course it was not.

“We still have quite a few things we can get better at but a clean sheet was important today and we worked together.”

Manchester United will play visitors to Aston Villa on January 15 in the Premier League.
